History of the Union Jack

The Union Flag, popularly known as the Union Jack, dates back to 1606, when the crosses of St George and St Andrew were first combined. It reached its modern form in 1801 with the Act of Union, when the red saltire of St Patrick was added to represent Ireland. Today the flag symbolises the union of England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, the red cross of St George (England), the white saltire of St Andrew (Scotland), and the red saltire of St Patrick (historically Ireland, now associated with Northern Ireland).
