History of the St George's Cross

The red cross on a white field has been associated with England since the Middle Ages, closely tied to the Crusades of the 12th and 13th centuries. Tradition holds that England and the City of London adopted the flag from the maritime Republic of Genoa around 1190, paying an annual tribute for the protection of the Genoese fleet at sea — though historians note this popular story can't be firmly verified, and the two nations may simply share a common crusader-era origin. What's certain is that St George was formally established as England's patron saint during the 14th century, under Edward III, and by the mid-16th century his cross had become the only saint's banner permitted for public display. It later formed the English component of the Union Jack in 1606, and today remains the enduring national flag of England.
