Australian Red Ensign Flag

This premium Australian Red Ensign Flag features the 7-point Commonwealth Star. It is fully sewn and appliqued, not printed. Each star and the Union Jack are stitched onto a deep red field that reflects Australia’s proud maritime heritage. This version matches the flag design in use since 1908.

Traditional Construction

Each flag is made to last with double-stitched hems, reinforced corners, and heavy-duty bunting. Built for wind, salt, and weather, it performs well both on land and at sea.

History of the Australian Red Ensign

After Federation in 1901, the first Australian flags showed a six-point Commonwealth Star. The design was gazetted in 1903 and later updated in 1908 to include seven points. Six represent the states, while the seventh stands for Papua and future territories.

For many years, the Red Ensign was used by merchant ships and the public. The Blue Ensign was reserved for government offices and official buildings. The Flags Act 1953, proclaimed in 1954, made the blue version the Australian National Flag for general use. The Red Ensign remains the recognised flag of the Australian Merchant Navy.
